1. Population estimates

The total population in Middlesbrough is estimated to be 139,500.  There is a higher than average population aged 20-29 due to students at Teesside University.

2. Population projections

Older population

The population aged 65 and over is forecast to increase from 22,400 in 2015 to 24,400 in 2020 (an 8.9% increase). By 2025, it is forecast to be 26,900, some 20% higher than in 2015.  The population aged 85 and over is forecast to increase from 2,900 in 2015 to 3,500 in 2020 and 4,000 by 2025.

The population aged under 15 is forecast to increase marginally and the working age population decrease marginally in the next 20 years.  The population aged 65 and over is set to increase markedly.
